Who runs the floor

Jeff Bergholtz

Founder · M.S., Exercise Physiology

He has been under a bar since he was eight years old, when an older brother home from college swimming put weights in his hands. Fifty-five years later he is still on the floor most days, and he still assesses every client personally.

He has held state titles in four decades, built hospital wellness programmes before the industry had a name for them, and came back after a 26-year layoff to win his class at 62. He is also the person who will run your first assessment.

The method

The power of 2

Jeff and his wife named the studio the night they watched A Beautiful Mind, the film about John Nash, who does not win the Nobel Prize without his wife. It takes two people to be successful at anything. That is the whole business.

Assessment first
Nobody trains before Jeff takes a medical history and runs an assessment. The hip replacement, the shoulder, the side that sits lower than the other. That is the starting point, not a footnote.
Written for you
Not the same circuit with different dumbbells. Your programme is built around your health status and your goals, and it changes as they do.
Accountability
People do better when someone else is doing the thinking and the pushing. That is what the second person in the room is for.
Retested
Packages run a 90-day minimum so there is a retest at the end of it, and a comparison against where you started. Progress gets measured, not assumed.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

How the hour runs

Every route in is written for one person and reviewed as the numbers move. Nothing here is run to a class timetable.

One-to-one session

Most requested

Personal training

One coach, one client. The studio was built for this and not much else.

You are assessed by Jeff, matched to a coach, and programmed individually. Sessions are bought in packages with a 90-day minimum so the work can be retested. Two people who train together can share a session, but it is not what the floor is set up for.

Membership

Floor access without a coach, on two tiers: Partner and Partner Plus.

The studio is the wellness amenity for the building, so membership stands on its own. Full use of the equipment and the locker rooms, no supervision, no sessions attached.

Physical therapy

A doctor of physical therapy on site, through Star Physical Therapy.

Star’s Performance and Concierge programme has run out of the studio for two years. Clients can be seen here, and you can engage them directly if what you need is medical supervision rather than training.

Every station is Sorinex

Five years ago the studio was stripped back and rebuilt around Sorinex. It is hand-built American strength equipment, and it is what more than thirty professional teams put in their weight rooms. Nothing on this floor was chosen on price.

Sorinex racks on the main floor
Hand-built in South Carolina
Raw steel goes in one end of their Lexington factory and finished racks come out the other, cut and welded on site. Almost nothing is outsourced.
Family-owned since 1980
Richard Sorin started building his own equipment because nobody was making what he wanted to train on. His son Bert runs the company now.
In thirty-plus pro weight rooms
The New England Patriots, the Golden State Warriors, the UFC and USA Hockey all train on it. So does this floor.
Apex racks, laid out in pairs
The rigs were chosen so a coach and a client own a station outright. Two sessions run side by side and neither one waits on the other.

Where you train

One floor on West End, kept deliberately quiet, with the equipment free when you need it because nobody is running a class through it.

Renovated five years ago and re-equipped end to end. Close in from Green Hills and Belle Meade.

At the studio

A Doctor of Physical Therapy on site

Star Physical Therapy’s Performance and Concierge programme has run out of this floor for two years. Your coach and a physical therapist are in the same building, so a problem gets looked at properly instead of trained around. You can also engage Star directly if what you need is medical supervision rather than training.

  • Full-service locker rooms
  • Towel service
  • Red light sauna

Who you work with

Every client is assessed by Jeff and matched to a coach deliberately, with the programme and the notes handed over. You are never picking a name off a list and hoping.

Rent space on this floor

Around ten independent trainers run their own books out of the studio. If you have clients but no room worth training them in, you get Sorinex equipment and a West End address without signing a lease.

Proof

After 90 days I lost 11 lbs of fat, put on 6lbs of fat-free muscle, lost 3 inches in my waist, and dropped my body fat from 16.4% to 11%

Tommy FristAfter one 90-day programme
I am a very busy person whose business schedule causes me to travel two to three times per week. Takes 2 Fitness kept me motivated and accountable while helping me stick with my routine.
Jerry Johnson
After trying a couple other gyms in Nashville I landed at Takes 2 a couple years ago and love it. Great trainers, great camaraderie … Everyone gets a ton of personal attention in training or the space to work out alone if that’s your preference.
Stephanie Morgan
They have a great facility that’s clean and up-to-date. Their staff are genuinely great people to be around and are motivating and friendly. … Have recommended this place to friends and family and now to everyone!

Before you book

Why Takes 2?

We believe that relationships are better than memberships. Anyone who trains here becomes part of a small community, and our goal is always to host you well. That means the cleanliness of this floor is something we all take personally. Everyone cleans, everyone racks, everyone treats it like they own it. If you have a suggestion, we want to hear it, whether that is a piece of equipment you would like on the floor or a time you would like to train.

Who should consider personal training?

Everyone. Whether you are just getting started or you want to take your fitness to the next level, personal training is the quickest and most efficient way to reach your goals. Our coaches love to come to the gym and train their clients every day, and they are eager to push you to your limits.

How much does it cost?

Sessions are bought in packages with a 90-day minimum, so there is a retest at the end of it and something to compare against. We will build a package around your budget, whether you train twice a month or five times a week. Ask Jeff for the current rates when you book your consultation.

What if I have an injury?

Tell us at the assessment. Your coach can program around the affected area and build a corrective strategy to improve the stability, mobility, and strength of it as it heals. There is also a doctor of physical therapy on this floor through Star Physical Therapy, so a problem gets looked at properly instead of trained around. No corrective or post-rehabilitation programme delivered here is intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease or mechanical malalignment. Always talk to your doctor before you start a new exercise programme.

Book a consultation

Every enquiry goes to Jeff directly. He takes the medical history, runs the assessment, and matches you to the coach who fits, then stays your point of contact for as long as you train here.
